A description of the types of sunglasses available and their UV protection 1

There are two main purposes for sunglasses. We wear sunglasses for two main reasons: to protect our eyes from ultraviolet rays, and to shield them from blinding light. It should be noted that these two things are not directly related, contrary to what may appear on the surface. A person may be able to wear a completely transparent pair of sunglasses that protect against UV rays while wearing sunglasses that may not actually provide them with sufficient protection from the sun. It would be helpful if we discussed the differences.

In order to better understand the importance of UV protection, let us first consider what UV protection actually means.

How does UV protection work?

In addition to ultraviolet rays, the sun emits harmful ultraviolet radiation. Those who are unaware of this can suffer just as severe health consequences as those who are aware of it. Sunglasses or glasses with UV protection should be coated with UV protection to prevent harmful UV rays from reaching the eye.

What are the benefits of UV protection?

If you are subject to excessive exposure to UV rays, your eyes can be damaged and can ultimately result in several eye diseases. Snow blindness is one of the risks associated with UVB rays, in addition to some types of eyelid cancers. The cornea of the eye is primarily responsible for absorbing UVB radiation. The ultraviolet radiation that we receive from the sun is mainly caused by ultraviolet A, which represents approximately 95% of the radiation we absorb. Symptoms such as cataracts and macular degeneration may result from such a condition.

Wearing sunglasses or lenses with UV protection is imperative to reducing your risk. There are several tint options available for our sunglasses, each of which is UV400 rated and offers 100% UV protection. Additionally, clear lenses can be coated with a UV protective coating.

Can you explain the categories of sunglasses?

Tinted lenses are the most common type of lens in sunglasses, whether they are prescription or non-prescription. Accordingly, category numbers are determined by the percentage of visible light transmission (VLT). As the VLT increases, the lens will become lighter. Conversely, if the percentage of VLT is lower, then the lens tint will be darker, which will result in more light being blocked from entering the eye.

A sunglass’ lens can be classified according to the intensity of its tint. A lens can be divided into five categories based upon how much light it absorbs through its surface.

  • The lenses which fall into category 0 are usually clear or very lightly tinted. The term is most commonly used to describe safety glasses or any form of eyewear that ensures that the user can clearly see.

  • It is common for category 1 lenses to be yellow-colored or to have a very light tint. In spite of the fact that they are primarily intended for fashion purposes, these sunglasses will give a mild level of protection on sunny days, even though they are not ideal for bright conditions.

  • It is recommended that you use Category 2 lenses when the weather is partly sunny and overcast. Colors that are commonly found in them include orange, rose, red, and blue.

  • There are several types of sunglasses, but category 3 sunglasses are the most common and provide additional UV protection. Dark sunglasses offered by our company fall within this category, offering 100% UV protection and reducing sunlight by 75%. A variety of colors are available, including brown, grey, and green. Wearing these sunglasses is a great way to look fashionable on a daily basis.

  • It is common for category 4 lenses to be very dark grey or brown in color. Mountaineering and other specialist activities require them, but they are not suitable for everyday use in the UK such as driving.
