Do you recall a time when you were outdoors wearing your prescription glasses but you forgot to bring sunglasses? The error is one that is commonly made. Perhaps you would benefit from photochromic lenses. As you move from indoors to outdoors, the colors change from light to dark.
What is a photochromic lens?
Alternatively known as transition lenses, photochromic lenses are extremely convenient and adapt to the changing light conditions indoors and outside, remaining clear indoors and darkening outdoors. As well as providing 100% UVA/B protection, they double as a fashionable pair of sunglasses when exposed to bright sunlight.
What is the mechanism of photochromic lenses?
A photochromic lens is constructed by fixing small molecules. In the absence of bright sunlight, the lens is completely clear. Molecular changes occur as light is absorbed, shifted, and shaped. Chemically, these molecules are changed and become darker, giving them the appearance of sunglasses. In the presence of UV rays, the photochromic lens will remain dark; when removed from those rays, however, the molecules will transform the lens back to its original clear appearance.
Several benefits are associated with photochromic lenses
- Providing dual functionality, these glasses can be used as both fully clear glasses as well as sunglasses, eliminating the need to carry two pairs.
- Providing complete protection from UVA and UVB rays of the sun.
- You can save money by purchasing both a pair of sunglasses and reading glasses at the same time.
The risk of cataracts and other eye diseases may be reduced by reducing your exposure to harmful UV rays.
Photochromic lenses may be disadvantageous in certain circumstances
-
It is not recommended to drive with standard photochromic lenses. Due to windscreens’ ability to block UV rays, the chemical process that darkens lenses will not be activated. Transitions®Drivewear® lenses, on the other hand, are specifically designed for driving and are designed with light intelligent technology and polarised lenses to reduce glare. It is always tinted, blocking 100% of the UV rays both behind the windscreen of a motor vehicle as well as outdoors. We would like to inform you that Transitions®Drivewear® is not suitable for use during the day or at night.

In spite of the fact that photochromic lenses transition from clear to dark quite rapidly, they generally take a great deal longer to reverse. When entering a dark room, this might pose a slight inconvenience or even a danger. Be aware of this and take precautions.

You will be protected from the sun by photochromic lenses, but they may not be suitable for individuals who have a high light sensitivity. In spite of this, they are suitable for the majority of wearers, however if you are affected by specific light conditions, be sure to seek advice.
